On a car stereo speaker, which wire is positive and which is negative?
There are 2 terminals, the head of one is larger than the other, how does this pertain to which is positive and which is negative?
If not otherwise marked, the larger terminal is usually positive.
You can easily determine the correct polarity yourself using the speaker itself. Before removing the harness or connectors from the speaker terminals, mark them with a small piece of tape. Just mark them 1 and 2. Likewise, mark the terminals themselves. Now use a short piece of speaker wire and a small low-current battery. A flashlight battery or 9V transistor battery is OK. Whichever you use, just tape the wires to the terminals, going vertically around the battery to hold the wires firmly on the terminals. Wrap the wire coming from battery negative to a speaker terminal and briefly touch the positive wire to the remaining terminal. Observe which way the cone moves when you touch the terminal. If it moves OUT, the terminal and the wire you removed from it is POSITIVE.
Don't leave DC current connected to a speaker for any length of time. Speakers are designed for AC and even a small DC current over a prolonged period of time will overheat and perhaps damage the voice coil.
