burnt out my speaker on an old sherwood receiver...?

I picked up an old sherwod s-2730 at a garage sale the other day, and when i came home i plugged two speakers from an old shelf system i had... the speakers were both 6 ohm and the receiver does not state how many ohms its putting out... anyways, the left speaker was fine and played great... the right speaker gave a high buzzing noise (like too much electricity is hitting it), and then i smelled burnt plastic and ofcourse the speaker burnt out.. the odd thing is that if I plug the speaker that worked on the left channel into the right channel, it does the same thing... i just shut the unit down before it has a chance to burn out... i keep the volume down to almost nothing...

so my question is... is there something wrong with the receiver that only the right channel is burning these speakers out? are the speakers way too weak? i just dont want to go and buy a new set of bigger speakers only to burn them out as well..

Thx!!

The right channel power amp in the reciever is defective, and is putting DC voltage into any speaker you plug into it. The receiver is beyond economical repair.
