Can I sell a car in need of repair (as-is) as a final sale in Massachusetts? (see notes for more)?

I have a 2001 Infiniti i30 that is broken down that I can no longer afford to keep or want. I have it for sale on Craigslist and Autotrader and someone who called just told me that I can't sell a broken vehicle. This was news to me. Does anyone know the truth?

There are certain things you must do.

If you're selling it as a vehicle that can be registered, most states require current registration, or at least current emissions.

If you are not, you must very specifically state that you are selling it as a parts car. "As-is" does not specify that it is non-operational. You must clarify that.

And many states require that you notify the DMV that the car is no longer in operating condition. That's your responsibility, not the buyer's.

So, depending on the situation, the buyer may be correct.

Also, keep in mind that a salvage yard only gives around 300$ for a broken down car. A car that doesn't run, isn't worth the metal it's made out of. So, for a 2001 Infiniti, I sure hope you're not asking more than around $500 or so for it.

The only one I saw that matches your description, is listed at almost $3600~. I sure hope that's not yours.

1st: It says absolutely nothing about what's wrong about the car. You say it's broken down, and completely avoid talking about how it broke down. A bad alternator doesn't equal "broken down".

2. Assuming that the car is below fair, which is 5k, and your car is broken down and "sitting motionless", it is FAR below "fair".
