Speakers "pop" when home receiver is turned off?
It's a older Pioneer home stereo. It has the receiver, amplifier, cd, and tape deck.
If I turn it on and then off it doesn't make the speakers pop, but if I leave it on for more than 5 minutes the speakers pop when I turn it off.
It just started doing that a few weeks ago. It's a really loud pop even if I turn the volume all the way down before turning it off.
I have some experience with car audio, when this happens in a car system it's generally because the amp it turning off before the receiver...how would this apply to a home stereo?
I tried adding a surge protector to it could turn off slowly or with a small delay but that didn't work!
I blew compressed air to make sure it was dust free and reconnected all the cables but that didn't work either.
I wouldn't like to replace it because I've had it for 15 years and its in mint condition and has never broken down..
Usually, this isn't a problem. But there may be a problem with the amplifier. It may be sending DC current to the speakers, which can overheat and damage the woofer speaker coils. here's how to check: Remove the grille from one of the speakers. Watch the woofer carefully, and turn the receiver on. If the woofer moves in (or out) a visible amount, and stays there as long as the receiver is on, then that movement is the result of DC output voltage. Replacement of the receiver is the next step if this is so. You have a power supply problem in the power amp which is only worth repairing on costly units. You can also check this by turning the speaker switch on and off (if the receiver is so equipped) while the receiver is on, rather than switching the receiver's power on and of.
