How do I blow out the lines on my inground pool?

I am going to be closing my inground pool for the first time this year. I watched a company do it last fall, so I have a pretty good idea what to do. However, they had a machine to blow out the lines from the filter to the pool. What can I use to do that myself. I have heard using a shop-vac on reverse, however I don't know if I will be able to create a good seal between the pipe and the shop-vac, or if it is even strong enough. Any suggestions?

A small to mid sized shop vac on blow will suffice. You will have to give the skimmer a few "shots" and make it look like an eruption, but that's normal, even with a proper pool blower. Don't use compressed air. If you do, make sure you have a way to keep it under 20 psi. Anything more is asking for trouble. If you go this route you'll have to hit the pool shop for an adapter to fit the plumbing ( pressure test tool) and it will start to cost you some bucks. You might be able to rent a pool blower from them They may allow one out for a Sunday, when their crews don't need it.
As for fitting it to the plumbing it couldn't be easier. The outside diameter on the smaller to mid size shop vacs are exactly the inside diameter of the pool plumbing. It fits in nicely. Likely, if you see those guys again, look at their blower. It'll have a shop vac hose duct taped to it. We all do that. The only issue for fit you may have is on the suction side of the pump. Some are 2 inch plumbing. Grab an old rag and wrap it around the hose to make up the difference. If it's normal 1 1/2 inch plumbing, no worries. The hose will fit exactly in that pipe as well. It'll be the same as the return plumbing.
